my artist statement
The intent of this series is to address the force that occurs between the human body and its environment. I believe that when one experiences environmental displacement, despite who or where they were prior to this shift, they will note changes within themselves. These changes can be either physical or communicative
To express this concept, I continued my previous attempts at traditional figure painting but imposed the figures onto a flat acrylic surface adorned with botanical silhouettes. During this process, I found the idea of cutting the figures off at sentimental regions of the body as interesting. I chose to paint these figures nude, often full-frontal. This portrayal is to note the vulenerability one faces when they are in an environment that is accepting in someways, yet oppressive in others. The silhouette acts as a force of nature against the figure, essentially becoming an enabler or disabler.
Initially, I executed these pieces by painting the flat color surface, followed by applying the silhouettes. Eventually, I decided who I wanted the figure to be in terms of gender, their pose, and their areas of obliteration. I work with a warm color palette. I cite artists such as Jenny Saville and Kahinde Wiley as influences. I am fascinated with Saville’s painterly translation of human flesh and its properties, as well as Wiley’s political statement of the urban African male versus the standards set by historic principles of art. After the completion of this series, I aspire to create pieces that further address environmental influence, for I feel this is especially vital in the 21st century.

Oh, for art’s sake…
So I’ve been working on a new series that I’m hoping will pick up succesfully. I’m basing the series off of the human figure and how it can either act with or against a surrounding environment. So far, I’ve decided to make the figures nude, without eyes and noses, thus stripping them of an identity, leaving only the essence of human interaction. I’ve started on a fairly small scale, but I’m hoping they’ll get larger as I resume.
I’ve even considered having opposing figures facing one another as a means of trying to communicate, but being unable to fully do so without the functions of their obliterated body parts. I’m in high hopes they will grow and become what I have inside of my scattered brain. Here’s a photo of the first painting:

new beginnings
So this will be my valiant effort as an attempt to create a new blog, journal, diary, what-ever-the-hell you plan on calling it. I’m hoping that I can remain faithful with wordpress, being as how it has such a good reputation and all.
Wish me luck & plenty to say.
